ALLMAN BROS: GREEK JAM BAND GODS! (5/9/05)
Flanked by contest winners sitting along both wings, the Allman Brothers Band hit the Greek Theatre stage in Los Angeles Friday night to a customary warm reception on an unseasonably cool night. And for the next 2 hours and forty minutes, the Brothers treated the sold-out throng to some very hot jams, which included a surprising amount of newer tunes (four from their last studio effort, Hittin’ the Note) as well as well worn favorites such as “Midnight Rider,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Stormy Monday” and the evening’s closer, “One Way Out.” Keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Allman looked and sounded in fine form, while the double-barrel guitar thunder and tone of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks electrified the audience with their sometime soaring, sometime searing solos, especially on “Soulshine,” an evening highlight, among many. The band plays the Sandia Casino Amphitheatre in Albuquerque, NM tomorrow night.
